Fauzi said that construction of a container yard is also underway in Kooddoo as part of the development work.

MIFCO Managing Director Ismail Fauzi has said that the company is in the process of expanding the harbour area of the island of Kooddoo in Gaafu Alif Atoll island which houses its fish processing factory in a bid to increase the direct export of fish from the factory.

In an interview with Atoll Times, Fauzi said that construction of a container yard is also underway in Kooddoo as part of the development work. He said the idea behind setting up a container yard was to ensure that fish could be sent directly from Kooddoo to foreign countries other than Thailand.

Container yard at Kooddu:

  • A 50 container yard is being constructed

  • All facilities for containers will be set up there

  • It will be completed by June-end

Noting that the existing harbour at Kooddu is world-class and can cater to bigger vessels, Fauzi said MIFCO plans to send Maldivian fish to new destinations aboard Maldives State Shipping (MSS) vessels. The markets he identified were:

  • Sri Lanka

  • India

  • Malaysia

  • Vietnam

"There are countries other than Thailand from where we have received orders of 100-200 tonnes. With this container yard, we can load fish on vessels and transport it to other countries," Fauzi said.

"We are looking at feasible new markets. We will focus on that."

Apart from constructing the container yard, efforts are also on to increase the capacity to 600 tonnes at a time for Kooddoo.
