Bassam serving 32-year sentence moved to house arrest

Former Football Association of Maldives (FAM) president Bassam Adeel Jaleel has been placed under house arrest while serving a prison sentence for embezzlement of FIFA funds.
Bassam was convicted on two counts and is serving a total sentence of 32 years in prison.
A corrections official confirmed to Dhauru that he has been transferred to house arrest. The reason for the transfer has not been disclosed, and no statement has been issued by the Maldives Correctional Service.
According to court records, Bassam was sentenced to nine years in prison for depositing $10,000 from FIFA funds into his personal account on 26 August 2018.
He was also sentenced to 23 years in prison for using funds from a $1.9 million relief loan provided by FIFA to purchase an apartment on Amin Avenue for $1 million.
Authorities have not provided further details regarding the transfer.
