Zariyand files police complaint over removal of posters
He alleged that the posters were removed without notice and said posters placed on private property had not been taken.
Independent candidate Ismail Zariyand has filed a complaint with police over the removal of his campaign posters in Hulhumalé ahead of the council elections.
Zariyand, who is contesting with the support of former President Abdulla Yameen, said in a post on social media on Monday that his posters were removed by individuals wearing Housing Development Corporation (HDC) uniforms.
He alleged that the posters were removed without notice and said posters placed on private property had not been taken.
In his post, Zariyand also referred to President Mohamed Muizzu and called for governance in line with democratic principles and the law.
Police have not yet commented on the complaint.
The issue follows the removal of campaign banners belonging to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in Hulhumalé earlier on Monday.
Several banners, including those of incumbent Malé Mayor Adam Azim, were removed by HDC employees.
HDC said the banners were removed because they had been placed without permission.
The MDP has disputed this, stating that permission requests had been delayed.
Following the removals, banners belonging to candidates from the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) were seen displayed in several areas of Hulhumalé.
