Bassam returned to jail after brief house arrest

Former Football Association of Maldives (FAM) president Bassam Adeel Jaleel has been transferred back to prison after a brief period under house arrest on Monday.

The Maldives Correctional Service had earlier placed Bassam under house arrest. The decision was shared on social media on Monday evening and drew public reaction.

A media official from the correctional service initially confirmed that Bassam had been moved to house arrest. Officials were not available for further comment at the time.

Later on Monday night, the correctional service issued a statement explaining the decision.

According to the statement, Bassam was placed under house arrest temporarily due to a medical condition following surgery, based on a doctor’s recommendation.

The correctional service said the transfer was carried out in line with procedures applied in such cases. The duration of the house arrest was not specified.

The statement added that Bassam was returned to prison after arrangements were made to continue his treatment following the procedure.

Bassam is serving a total sentence of 32 years in prison after being convicted on charges related to the embezzlement of FIFA funds.

He was sentenced to nine years in prison for depositing $10,000 from FIFA funds into his personal account on 26 August 2018.

He was also sentenced to 23 years in prison for using funds from a $1.9 million loan provided by FIFA to purchase an apartment on Amin Avenue for $1 million.
