President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that individuals allocated land under the ‘Binveriya’ scheme will be given the option to relinquish their plots and apply for housing flats developed by the government.

He made the statement on Monday at a press conference held at the President’s Office.

The President said the decision follows requests from plot recipients seeking to apply for ongoing housing projects by surrendering their land allocations.

He noted that land allocation requires beneficiaries to undertake construction, while flats provide housing upon completion.

The President also referred to concerns raised by recipients of land in Gulhifalhu and Giraavarufalhu regarding the time required for infrastructure and related works.

“Those who have been allocated land in the Malé region will be given the opportunity to surrender their plots and apply for flats,” he said.

He added that applications will be assessed through a process that considers existing ownership status.

The President said individuals who already hold land will be evaluated differently from those without housing.

He noted that updates to the housing portal are required to implement the change.

“Within the next two weeks, arrangements will be completed and the opportunity will be opened for those who received land under the ‘Binveriya’ scheme to apply,” he said.

The government’s housing programme aims to deliver 12,000 housing units in the Malé region during the current term, including 7,700 units allocated as social housing.
