Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim said that individuals who dispose of waste in the sea and on beaches in the Maldives will face fines under a proposed rule.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office Monday, the Minister said that a rule is being prepared to address the disposal of waste in the sea and on beaches.
He said the measure is intended to raise awareness rather than to punish.
“However, such actions continue to occur. Waste is disposed of in the sea, in areas where disposal is not permitted, and on beaches. Those responsible will be held liable under this rule. If required, fines will be imposed,” he said.
The Minister said the environment is linked to the economy and requires monitoring.
“If waste is not managed in a safe manner and actions lead to environmental harm, including the disposal of waste in the sea, fines will be imposed in the future,” he said.
