Police link harbour incident to generator smoke
Preliminary findings indicate that the generator had been left running in an enclosed area, resulting in smoke inhalation among those sleeping nearby.
Maldives Police Service has stated that five crew members found unconscious on a vessel in Malé North Harbour were affected by smoke emissions from a generator operated in a confined space.
The incident involved a vessel identified as ‘DMMA Express 5’, which operates to northern islands. The five individuals include one Maldivian male and four expatriates. They are receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. Police said their condition is improving.
According to police, preliminary findings indicate that the generator had been left running in an enclosed area, resulting in smoke inhalation among those sleeping nearby.
Police have advised the public to avoid using equipment that emits gases, including generators, in enclosed spaces used for sleeping or resting.
They stated that inhalation of generator exhaust can lead to loss of consciousness and may pose a risk to life.
Police also advised vessel operators to ensure ventilation in sleeping areas and to avoid operating generators in a way that allows smoke to enter these spaces.
