The People's National Front (PNF) on Tuesday rejected a warning issued by the Elections Commission (EC) regarding ongoing street demonstrations, stating that the Commission’s position is not supported by law.
The EC had earlier indicated that it may take legal action if the activities continue. The Commission issued two statements, stating that the conduct in question breaches the code of ethics for political parties and warning of possible disciplinary measures.
The demonstrations began after a documentary released by Adhadhu late last month raised allegations against President Mohamed Muizzu. Since then, PNF supporters have held gatherings in Malé, where a sofa is placed in public spaces and the events are broadcast live.
In a statement, the PNF denied that it has conducted organised political activity in the manner described by the EC. The party stated that the Commission’s warning is inconsistent with democratic principles and is intended to affect its standing.
The party also stated that it is not required to obtain permission from the EC to hold protests. It argued that the Commission does not have jurisdiction over public spaces in the capital.
“Should such actions be repeated, this party will seek legal recourse against the Elections Commission,” the PNF said in its statement.
The PNF further criticised the EC’s communication, stating that there are inconsistencies within the document. According to the party, statements made in one section are contradicted by other sections.
