The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said on Friday that the risk of Hantavirus to the Maldives remains low following concerns linked to an outbreak on a cruise vessel.
The outbreak occurred on a ship that departed from Argentina about a month ago. According to reports, three people have died and four others have been evacuated from the vessel for treatment.
The HPA stated that it is monitoring the situation in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO).
According to the agency, no cases of the virus or individuals identified as close contacts of infected persons have been reported in the Maldives.
The HPA said the overall public health risk to the Maldives is currently assessed as very low and noted that updates would be issued if further information becomes available.
The WHO also stated on Friday that the public health risk linked to the virus remains limited because transmission generally requires close contact.
According to the WHO, Hantavirus mainly spreads among rodents, while transmission to humans occurs in limited circumstances.
