President Mohamed Muizzu announced on Saturday that the government plans to launch a housing project at Bandeyri Koshi next year for members of the police and military services.

The President made the announcement during a ceremony held at Kalhuthukkala Koshi to mark the 134th anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).

Bandeyri Koshi is an area in Malé allocated for accommodation of military personnel and their families.

Speaking at the event, Muizzu said the number of officers and families currently benefiting from housing at Bandeyri Koshi remains limited and noted that many of the buildings in the area are in deteriorating condition.

“Bandeyri Koshi has remained in this state for years without being developed. While every administration has discussed it, it has remained a neglected issue. However, I have decided to change this,” the President said.

He stated that the government aims to begin physical work on the project by early next year and plans to complete preparatory work within the next eight months.

According to the President, the redevelopment project will cover the entire Bandeyri Koshi area and provide housing for military personnel, police officers and their families.

Muizzu also said existing buildings in the area would be demolished as part of the project and that residents currently living there would be temporarily relocated during construction.

He did not specify where those residents would be moved.

“Our target is to begin the physical work of a major housing project in that area within the next eight months, by early next year at the latest,” the President said.
