Former President Mohamed Nasheed said on Wednesday night that the imprisonment of journalists would negatively affect the Maldives’ economy and the welfare of its citizens.

Nasheed made the remarks after briefly joining a protest held at the Artificial Beach area calling for the release of two journalists from Adhadhu.

Speaking at the gathering, Nasheed said freedom of expression and freedom of the press are rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

He said arresting journalists for asking questions instead of responding to them would affect the country’s prosperity and the self-sufficiency of its people.

The Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced two Adhadhu journalists, Leevan Ali Nasir and Mohamed Shahuzan, to prison in connection with their reporting and questions regarding a documentary released by the outlet.

The documentary contained allegations of misconduct involving President Mohamed Muizzu despite a court order prohibiting discussion of the matter.

Criminal charges have also been filed against Adhadhu Chief Executive Officer Hussain Fiyaz Moosa and Managing Editor Hassan Mohamed in relation to the documentary.

Nasheed said the Maldivian Democratic Party would continue protests in support of journalists’ rights.
