Former presidents Mohamed Nasheed, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih are scheduled to hold a joint consultative meeting on Friday to discuss issues related to press freedom.

The planned meeting follows a call by former Maldivian Democratic Party chairperson Fayyaz Ismail urging opposition leaders to unite against the administration of President Mohamed Muizzu.

Former President Yameen on Wednesday stated that he was prepared to participate in such an effort.

An official from the People's National Front confirmed that the meeting is expected to take place on Friday night.

The discussions would mark the first formal meeting involving the three former political rivals in a joint political effort.

Before the recent local council elections, Nasheed and Solih held discussions on the possibility of cooperation with Yameen, although those talks did not progress further at the time.

The planned meeting comes amid ongoing legal action involving Adhadhu.

Authorities searched the outlet’s office under a court warrant after the publication released a documentary containing allegations against President Muizzu.

The state has since filed charges against two senior executives of the organisation.

Two journalists from Adhadhu, Leevan Ali Nasir and Mohamed Shahuzan, were also sentenced to prison following proceedings held behind closed doors.

The journalists were accused of violating a Criminal Court order related to the documentary case.
