Three former presidents — Mohamed Nasheed, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih — are preparing to hold a joint meeting to discuss cooperation on issues related to press freedom in the Maldives.

The planned meeting follows a call by former Maldivian Democratic Party chairperson Fayyaz Ismail urging opposition leaders to unite against the administration of President Mohamed Muizzu.

Former President Yameen on Wednesday expressed his willingness to participate in such an alliance.

A source confirmed to Dhauru news that the three former presidents are expected to meet in the coming days to discuss possible cooperation.

“The primary objective of this meeting is to deliberate on how the three leaders can work together collectively,” a senior official involved in arranging the discussions said.

The date and venue of the meeting have not been confirmed.

Yameen is currently in Malé, while Nasheed travelled to Laamu Atoll on Thursday for a campaign event. Solih is currently in India.

According to sources, the meeting is expected to take place after Nasheed and Solih return to the capital.

The discussions come amid concerns over press freedom following legal action linked to a documentary released by Adhadhu containing allegations against President Muizzu.

Authorities later conducted a court-authorised search of the outlet’s office, while charges were filed against two senior executives of the publication.

Two journalists from Adhadhu were also sentenced to prison over allegations that they violated a Criminal Court order related to the case.

The hearings were conducted behind closed doors and concluded within a single day, according to reports.
