The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported 55 new cases of Measles over the past week, bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the Maldives to 121.

Measles, which was declared eliminated in the Maldives nine years ago, re-emerged early last month. Since then, the number of reported cases has continued to increase.

According to the HPA, all of the new cases were detected in the Greater Malé area.

The agency said 5,495 people have received the measles vaccine since the start of the outbreak as part of efforts to limit further transmission.

Health authorities have also noted that the Maldives is among the countries in the region recording a high number of measles cases this year.

Regional data indicates that Bangladesh has reported the highest number of cases, followed by India, with the Maldives ranking third. Sri Lanka and Nepal have reported lower case numbers.

Dr. Ahmed Faisal, a paediatrician at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), said the Maldives should verify the vaccination status of expatriate workers arriving from countries with high rates of measles transmission before issuing visas. He also called for continued vigilance in monitoring symptoms among incoming tourists.

The HPA said common symptoms of measles include fever, a runny nose, cough, red eyes and a skin rash.

The agency has advised anyone experiencing fever accompanied by a rash to seek medical attention promptly. It also urged people to wear a mask when visiting a healthcare facility, avoid using public transport, remain in isolation while awaiting test results if measles is suspected, and avoid public gatherings if they are showing symptoms.
