Thailand's Cabinet has approved a reduction in the visa-free stay period for tourists from several countries, including the Maldives, from 60 days to 30 days.

The decision, announced on Tuesday, revokes the 60-day visa exemption introduced in July 2024 for travellers from 93 countries.

According to Thai authorities, the change follows concerns that the extended visa-free stay had been misused for illegal activities, raising issues related to public safety and national security.

Under the revised policy, nationals of 59 countries, including the Maldives, will continue to receive visa-free entry for up to 30 days.

The change also increases the visa-free stay period for travellers from some countries that previously received shorter exemptions, including the Maldives, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, India and Malta.

The revised regulations will take effect 15 days after they are published in Thailand's Royal Gazette.

Thailand introduced the 60-day visa-free entry scheme in July 2024 as part of efforts to increase tourist arrivals.
