Waste transfer operations to return to normal from Saturday, says WAMCO

The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has announced that waste transfer services across the Greater Malé region will return to normal from Saturday following disruptions caused by last week's fire at the Regional Waste Management Facility in K. Thilafushi.
Following the fire, WAMCO reduced the volume of waste accepted at its transfer stations, affecting waste collection services across the region.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the corporation said its Call and Pick-up Service (CAPS) will also resume normal operations on Saturday.
The temporary suspension of the service resulted in waste accumulating in parts of the Greater Malé area, prompting complaints from the public.
WAMCO reminded customers that waste delivered to its transfer stations must comply with waste segregation requirements.
The corporation said construction debris and cement bags must be separated before disposal and warned that transfer stations will not accept unsegregated construction waste.
On Thursday, WAMCO Managing Director Mujthaba Jaleel also announced that the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) had allocated a plot of land to assist in addressing the waste management challenges following the disruption at Thilafushi.
The corporation has not disclosed further details of how the land will be used.
