Police have arrested a 44-year-old Maldivian man over the alleged sexual assault of a 72-year-old woman after entering a house in R. Angolhitheemu.

Police said on Tuesday that the case was reported at around 8:30pm on Sunday. The man is accused of entering the house, sexually assaulting the woman by force and threatening to kill her.

The woman received treatment at the Angolhitheemu Health Centre following the incident and has since been discharged, according to police.

Police said the 44-year-old suspect was arrested on Monday under a court order.
