Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) on Thursday urged people to be cautious about two cough syrups for children manufactured in India, which have been banned by the World Health Organisation (WHO) due to the presence of toxic substances.

The MFDA said in an announcement on Thursday:

  • WHO recently banned Ambroxol cough syrup and Dock-1 Max for containing harmful substances in the body

  • These are syrups manufactured by Maiden Pharmaceuticals in India

  • Although these medicines are not allowed to be imported into the Maldives, they are likely to be brought in to the country following any doctor’s prescription

  • They would investigate further to prevent the drugs from entering.

"As a precautionary measure, it has been conveyed that we will continue to conduct searches at ports with special care while importing medicines for prescriptions," the announcement said.

The MFDA has also asked people to contact their hotline, 7200321, without delay if they receive any information about the above mentioned medicines circulating in the country.

WHO banned the two cough syrups after a group of children died in Uzbekistan who drank the same.

In October last year too, WHO had banned four cough syrups manufactured by India's Maiden. At that time, the MFDA had advised caution to the public.
