Resorts have been given six months to get approval for the design of water and sanitation systems.

The Utility Regulatory Authority, in a notification issued on Monday, said that it was mandated to approve designs of water, sanitation, electricity and waste management systems in resorts under required to bethe Water And Sanitation Act, Energy Act, and Waste Management Act.

The notification states:

  • The design of water, sanitation, electricity and waste management systems in new resorts to be opened after February 1 will have to be submitted to the authority for prior approval

  • Operational resorts that have not prepared the design report of the utility systems will have to submit the design to the authority by July 22 for approval

Failure to adhere to the deadlines will result in legal action, the authority said.

According to the Waste Management Act, those who have to make an industrial waste management plan can be fined up to MVR 50,000 if they fail to make such a plan.

The penalty amount to be paid by the resorts will be deposited in the Green Fund.
