Mohamed Nazeer, Director of Sunland Hotels, passed away on Saturday in the United Kingdom.
His death follows an extended period of illness, according to media reports.
Nazeer began his involvement in the tourism sector through a family-run travel agency during the early development of tourism in the Maldives.
In the early 1990s, the government awarded a tender to develop a resort, which led to the establishment of Makunudu, the first resort opened under his leadership.
Nazeer was also a shareholder in Sunland Hotels. The company became the first Maldivian entity to launch a luxury resort brand, Coco Collection, which currently operates two resorts in the country.
