Army bodyguards who were guarding Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed during his assassination attempt in May 2021 were presented special medals in recognition of their bravery Tuesday.
Nasheed sustained serious injuries when he an IED attached to a motorcycle outside his home in capital Male was detonated on 6 May 2021. His bodyguards who were also injured in the attack took the former president to safety before taking him to the hospital.
At the official function held to mark the 130th anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), army commander General Abdulla Shamal handed over commendation medals to three of Nasheed's bodyguards:

Police say Nasheed was attacked by extremists. Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed, the main person who was actively involved in carrying out the attack, has been sentenced to 23 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the charges.
Trial of eight other suspects are ongoing.
