Male City Council spokesperson Mariyam Shiuna, who called for bloodshed on Twitter, was advised on the matter and the tweet was deleted under instruction, Male mayor Dr Mohamed Muizz said on Sunday.

Shiuna called for a regime change for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih even if "at the cost of bloodshed", in a tweet on Thursday. However, later, she deleted the tweet. The city council is being criticised by some for not for not taking action against her in the case.

Muizz told Atoll Times on Sunday that the issue of the tweet came to his notice from another councillor and from that time he had contacted Shiuna and advised her.

"When I spoke to Shiuna, I told her that she cannot tweet like that. That she must not instigate or call for anything that could lead to bloodshed or violence. After giving such advice, I asked her to delete the tweet and remove it immediately," Muizz said.

Muizzu said it was unacceptable to encourage bloodshed or violence of any kind.

"That's why I immediately took action. Once again, she deleted the tweet as I instructed," Muizz said.

The account that Shiuna was using as 'Nannazeev' was suspended by Twitter on Saturday night.

In her tweet Shiuna said that some people had to come out very strongly to end the rule of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. She accused President Solih of "atrocities against Muslims" and said that "the government needed to be changed even at the price of bloodshed".

Soon after the tweet was deleted, Shiuna said in another tweet the same day that she deleted the first tweet because some people were "taking the wrong meaning of it".

"I'm sorry if anyone tookharsh meaning from the tweet," Shiuna tweeted in the afternoon.

Police says they are looking into the matter.
