Maldives raises MVR 3.2m in aid to quake hit Turkey, Syria

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to donate 1 million fish cans on behalf of Maldivians to those affected in Turkey and Syria.

The International Aid Campaign (IAC) and the Maldives Red Crescent have so far received a total of MVR 3.2 million in aid from Maldives to the people affected by Monday's earthquake in Turkey.

The two organisations are open to providing assistance to people in distress in Turkey and Syria. Thus:

  • The IAC told Atoll Times this evening that it has so far received MVR 2.8 million 

  • According to data released by the Red Crescent, the organisation received MVR 438,537.60 so far

More than 20,000 people were killed and thousands were affected by the quake. IAC has started providing aid from the money it is receiving. An IAC team has been deployed in Turkey.

IAC's Director of International Relations Mohammad Adheen Ali told Atoll Times this Friday evening that the organization is:

  • In Turkey, fresh, cooked food is being distributed to the needy 

  • Efforts are also being made to provide enough food for a month to the surviving families

Mohamed, who is currently in Turkey, said the organisation had provided some relief materials to aid the rescue of people trapped under buildings that had been flattened by the quake in Syria. He said:

  • It includes compressors used to destroy large rocks, brick hammers and digging tools

  • Also, rain coats will be provided for rain shelters

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent will provide the Maldivian donated financial assistance to those affected in Turkey and Syria.

While the IAC team has started the relief work in Turkey, Dr Mohamed Ali, hadleft for Turkey on Thursday night to attend to the sick.
