President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced on Saturday plans to develop another island especially for students near Kudagiri, the picnic island that was officially opened on Saturday.
The president made the remarks while speaking at a ceremony held at Kudagiri Island.
The president said that after the development of Kudagiri, it is the government's intention to develop an island for students adjacent to the island. When Kudagiri was being developed, discussions were held on it, he said.
"It's an island where students who are studying can travel, camp, and prepare the scout and girl guide services for them," he said.
HDC has been entrusted with the responsibility of running Kudagiri. He said it was his hope and appeal that HDC should develop the other island without delay and provide services to the students.
"On the day Kudagiri was handed over to HDC, I conditioned to do so in that meeting. When HDC opens them and begins services, the island will have to be here," he said.
Kudagiri is an island for people living in the Greater Male Region to go for picnics. President Solih's presidential pledge is to develop an island that allows people living in congested Male city to travel to comfort themselves during holidays.
Kudagiri was built on a large lagoon west of Thilafushi. There's enough space in the lagoon to build another island. In addition to the shallow areas, there is also a large large reef area n the lagoon that includes Kudagiri.
