Police to crackdown on wearing helmets in crimes

There has been a rise in cases of robberies and gang violence involving people wearing helmets.

In areas where wearing helmets is not mandatory, helmet-clad bikers will be stopped and searched, police said on Monday.

There has been a rise in cases of robberies and gang violence involving people wearing helmets. In addition to those who stormed a cafe in Hulhumale on Thursday night and vandalised it, those who attacked a man with a sharp object at a shop in Male on Friday night were wearing helmets to cover their faces.

"In areas where wearing helmets is not mandated by the law, it has been noticed that some people wear helmets are hiding who they while committing crimes," the police said in a statement.

Motorcycle riders and passenger are required to wear helmets while driving in areas where speed limits exceed 30 kmph.
