Ameer explains inflation calculation to MP Ibrahim Rasheed

The minister noted that MBS prepares and publishes the CPI reports of Male, atolls and the entire country once a month.

Maafannu Central MP Ibrahim Rasheed has requested fnance minister Ibrahim Ameer to explain how the inflation rate is calculated in the Maldives.

MP Ibrahim Rasheed asked the minister for a written response:

  • To clarify how inflation is being calculated now

  • To clarify the burden given to oil products to calculate the Consumer Price Index (CPI)

In a written reply to the member's questions, the minister said the National Bureau of Statistics (MBS) calculates the inflation levels in the country.

The minister's reply said:

  • The current CPI is an index of prices of goods and services selected on the basis of household expenditure in the HouseHold Income and Expenditure Survey 2016

  • Once a month to prepare CPI, MBS takes prices amounting more than MVR 9,500 from four islands in Male and atolls

  • The burden on crude oil production in CPI is 0.57%

In his reply, the minister noted that MBS prepares and publishes the CPI reports of Male, atolls and the entire country once a month.
