Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on Sunday met with Maldivian foreign minister Abdulla Shahid in India, in the presence of Indian external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar, as rumours are rife with Nasheed backing Shahid in the upcoming ruling MDP primary for the 2023 presidential elections.
Dhauru understands that this meeting occurred amid wedding celebrations of a politically affiliated family, but details are not clear.
Ungoofaaru MP Mohamed Waheed had uploaded photographs of the meeting on a WhatsApp group where there are many journalists as well. The pictures show that several MDP parliament members were present at the function, including MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail’s brother Hussen Ismail.
Previously, Nasheed had recommended Shahid, who is also President of the United Nations General Assembly, as the next presidential candidate for MDP.
However, neither Nasheed nor Shahid has responded to questions regarding this meeting.
Nasheed had left for India on an unofficial trip on Saturday, while Shahid arrived on official business in his UN capacity on Sunday, meeting Jaishankar on Monday, covering a range of key issues in their discussion, including cooperation at the UN.
Nasheed’s party allies confirm that political discussions had undergone in this meeting, but they are not privy to details either.
