An employee of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has been busted in a case of stealing a huge amount of money from the company's safe.

According to the findings of Atoll Times, the theft from HDC's safe was found when some residents of flats built in Hulhumale Phase I started complaining after the company issued notices to them for non-payment of rent.

HDC’s public relations manager Ahmed Mimrah confirmed to Atoll Times that this matter had come to light recently.

Mimrah said that it was only in January that the employee of HDC was found to be stealing from the company's safe.

He added that since a thorough audit was underway in the case, it was yet to be ascertained how much money was stolen exactly.

Atoll Times’ findings suggest that:

  • The total amount of stolen money was more than MVR 200,000

  • This includes the cash rent paid by the residents of some of the flats built by the government in Hulhumale Phase I to the HDC counter, as well as the amount paid to the company in some other ways.

According to Mimrah:

  • HDC will file a complaint with the authorities to recover the stolen money

  • Only one employee involved in robbery; he has been dismissed from service

The HDC did not explain how such thefts were possible. Mimrah said the company has taken necessary steps to ensure that such a thing does not recur in the future.

An employee of HDC is found to have siphoned off a huge amount of money from the company's safe, while news of another employee of the company taking MVR 1 million in bribe and selling a piece of land stolen from K. Thilafushi to a private company surfaced on Wednesday.

The findings of Atoll Times show that the land was registered earlier this year. An internal audit brought the matter to the notice of HDC two weeks ago, a reliable source confirmed to Atoll Times.

While the company has denied any money to HDC accounts in the transaction, the employee who took the bribe is currently suspended from service.
