Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam, who was detained by police Monday night on charges of obstructing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's motorcade, has been released.

Shiyam, who is also the opposition PPM vice-president, was taken into police custody after president's motorcade was obstructed during a protest organised by the party led by him. He was released about four hours after his arrest.

PPM/PNC spokesperson Heena Waleed said Shiyam had left the protest when the president's motorcade had gone to the protest area.

"Shiyam was sitting at Lesouq cafe, next to the party office, for a cup of coffee at that time. He was not in the protest. Shyam was arrested to hide the security lapses," she said.

A police spokesperson said four were arrested for obstructing the president's motorcade. While all of them are still under arrest, Shyam is not among them, he added.

At least 17 people including eight men and nine women were also arrested during the opposition's protest.
