Energy consumption in the Male region had risen to a record high on Monday due to heat wave conditions in the Maldives.
April and May are expected to be the hottest months for Maldives this year, but unlike other times, this time the atmosphere is warming and there has been an increase in power generation even at night.
STELCO said in a statement that the average electricity consumption, or average energy consumption, in the Male region, including Male and Hulhumale, has risen to record levels due to the heat wave. The peak load crossed the 102 MW mark at 1410 hours, the statement said. There was also a power outage for about 30 minutes in the capital.
STELCO has appealed to the public to pay special attention to economising power.
