Senior leaders of the PPM-PNC coalition will travel to Sri Lanka on Wednesday to share their concerns with diplomats over the trial of jailed opposition leader, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

In a message sent to the media on Wednesday, PNC Vice-President and Maavashu MP Mohamed Saeed and PNC leader and Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef will represent the coalition.

The coalition said it would raise concerns with foreign envoys about the ongoing trial of Yameen on additional charges. The concerns raised by the opposition include:

  • While Yameen's appeal against his existing 11-year prison sentence is yet to be scheduled, cases in lower courts are being fast-tracked

  • Because of that Yameen has been deprived of many of his rights under the laws

  • Home minister Imran Abdulla's tweets also reveal the level of personal grudge he has against Yameen, which is why the coalition is concerned about Yameen's safety

  • Yameen is the opposition's presidential candidate, but he has been denied his right to campaign

The PPM-PNC coalition recently met with the Human Rights Commission (HRCM) over concerns that the government was unfairly treating Yameen.

Yameen's sentence has raised questions about whether he can contest the September 9 presidential election.
