Bilehdhoo MP Ahmed Haleem has praised President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih extensively on Saturday, saying he will give his full support to sustain the government in all possible ways, both in parliament and outside it, and pledged to stand together in the upcoming presidential elections.

Haleem, a close aide of parliament speaker Mohamed Nasheed who is currently working to form a breakaway party called The Democrats, praised President Solih at the inauguration ceremony of the new office built by Fenaka in F. Magoodhoo.

Haleem said that he ran for parliament at the request of President Solih after he had said that Haleem "should sit in parliament".

Noting that President Solih's reason for saying that he should sit in parliament is evident now, Haleem said that the reason is to do what is required in the parliament to maintain the government's standing.

"I came to parliament because President Solih felt it was the place where I should be. Otherwise, I won't have done so much hard work," he said.

Haleem said:

  • He has diligently voted on the budget presented by the government in each of the last four years, and will continue to vote in the future

  • He is 100% confident that President Solih will win majority of votes in the Bilehdhoo constituency in the upcoming presidential elections

  • He assured President Solih of his support in the parliament in the future as well

Noting that he was with President Solih, Haleem added that he would not go anywhere for fear or influence of a particular person.

Haleem was one of the five members of MDP who did not sign the no-confidence motion that was moved against deputy speaker Eva Abdulla on Tuesday.
