Velana International Airport (VIA) on Monday began accepting digital identity cards for domestic flights.

In a statement, airport operator Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) said the move follows the issuance of a circular by the defence ministry's Directorate of Aviation Administration (DACA) authorising the acceptance of a wider range of identification documents by VIA for checking in passengers on domestic flights.

Passengers flying domestically from VIA can now use any non-expired documents for airline ticket purchase, check-in, and identification at security checkpoints:

  • Passport

  • National identity (both physical card and digital version)

  • Work visa (both physical card and digital version)

  • Driving licence (both physical card and digital version)

  • Airport security pass

  • Any government-issued identification document with the passenger's photo national identity number

"This new development reaffirms MACL's commitment to enhancing passenger convenience and embracing digital transformation in its operations," MACL said in the statement.
