Ruling MDP's parliamentary group on Monday issued a three-line whip to vote for the no-confidence motion moved against deputy speaker Eva Abdulla.

It also issued a three-line whip to vote against the no-confidence motions submitted by the opposition against two ministers.

The group's leader, Hithadhoo North MP Mohamed Aslam confirmed the decision taken at a meeting of the group on Monday.

Ruling MDP's parliamentary group on Tuesday submitted a no-confidence motion against Eva, days after the Galolhu North MP quit the party and announced the formation of a new party with former top MDP officials loyal to MDP president Mohamed Nasheed.

Fifty out of the 55 MDP MPs in parliament signed the motion.

MPs and supporters backing Nasheed quit the ruling MDP on Wednesday, and have since announced efforts to form a new political party called The Democrats and field their candidate to the upcoming presidential election.

According to the constitution:

  • Vote of two-thirds of the parliamentarians is needed to pass a no-confidence motion against the speaker or the deputy speaker

  • At least 43 MPs need to vote in favour of the motion

  • MDP has 55 MPs in the parliament

Meanwhile, parliament has served notice to Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath and foreign minister Abdulla Shahid to respond to the no-confidence motions filed against them by the opposition over the government's stand in delimitation of the maritime boundary between the Maldives and Chagos in the south.
