Kulhudhuffushi councillors join Nasheed's The Democrats

Twelve MPs along with several aides of Nasheed quit MDP earlier this month and obtained permission from the Elections Commission to form The Democrats.

All members of Hdh. Kulhudhuffushi council on Tuesday joined The Democrats, a new breakaway party being formed by aides of MDP president Mohamed Nasheed.

Mohamed Saif Fathih, the interim spokesman for The Democrats, said in a message to the media that seven members of Kulhudhuffushi council joined the party.

The members of Kulhudhuffushi council who were elected on the ticket of the ruling coalition's main party MDP are:

  • Mayor Mohamed Athif

  • Deputy mayor Ali Ahmed

  • Athifa Ali

  • Rilwan Mohamed

  • Mohamed Dawood

  • Ahmed Abdulla

  • Aiminath Majida

Twelve MPs along with several aides of Nasheed quit MDP earlier this month and obtained permission from the Elections Commission to form The Democrats.

Efforts are on to reach the 3,000-member requirement to apply to register the party.

Members who have left MDP to join the party, including those holding political positions in the government, are also being dismissed from their jobs.
