MDP on Wednesday condemned party president Mohamed Nasheed's remarks welcoming the defection of all members of HDh. Kulhudhuffushi city council from MDP, describing the remarks as undemocratic.

All the members of the Kulhudhuffushi council have signed up for The Democrats, a new party led by Nasheed. Nasheed, who attended the second anniversary of the Kulhudhuffushi council as the speaker of parliament, welcomed the departure of the councillors from the MDP. He described it as a "political uprising" and encouraged the members to continue their work.

MDP deputy chairperson Ibrahim Waheed told Atoll Times on Wednesday that he does not believe that Nasheed's remarks in Kulhudhuffushi can be made while remaining as the party president.

"He made a very alien statement to democracy. Welcoming defections from one's own party is something I don't believe anyone who knows democracy at all would say," he said.

Ibrahim Waheed said:

  • The party's charter describes the responsibilities of the party president

  • These include maintaining the interests of the members and ensuring the party's unity

“It was very irresponsible to speak against the responsibilities entrusted to him,” he said.

However, MDP has no intention of taking action against Nasheed. At the latest press conference, the party chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said he was reluctant to take action against Nasheed because of the respect he had.

Nasheed has led the work of a new political party, but he has not yet resigned as the MDP president. Although he did not openly work for a new political party, this was the first time he spoke encouragingly about the formation of The Democrats.
