Afeef meets pres over parliament deadlock
Miuvan told Atoll Times that President Solih met Afeef on his request to discuss the deadlock in parliament
Villufushi MP Hassan Afeef, who is currently chairing parliament sittings, met President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday.
A video of Afeef entering the President's Office has gone viral on social media. Afeef arrived at the President's Office around 12.30 pm.
Presidential spokesperson Miuvan Mohamed told Atoll Times that President Solih met Afeef on his request to discuss the deadlock in parliament over the failure by party leaders to agree on reconstituting the standing committees.
Miuvan, however, did not disclose additional details.
Under Article 44 of the parliament's rules of procedure:
-
If the speaker and the deputy speaker are unable or unwilling to preside over sittings, the speaker should appoint five MPs based on the length of their service in parliament to chair sittings
-
The members appointed to do so can preside in three consecutive sittings
Monday's sitting is the third day that Afeef will preside over the sittings. However, if Nasheed and deputy speaker Eva Abdulla are unwilling to preside over the sitting, the parliament cannot proceed further.
Nasheed and Eva stopped chairing sittings after ruling MDP filed no-confidence motion against both.
