Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) on Saturday questioned the fairness of the September 9 presidential election.
MRM issued a statement on Saturday expressing concern over the Elections Commission's decision to dissolve the party.
The EC decided to dissolve the MRM on May 24. The Civil Court issued a stay order on May 28 after the party sought an order to stay the dissolution.
The MRM statement said that the Elections Commission’s actions, such as the decision to dissolve the party, are against the spirit of the constitution and the Political Parties Act.
"The party believes that the Elections Commission's announcement of the decision to dissolve the MRM was illegal and carried out in a manner suspected to be for political gain”, MRM said.
MRM, which is part of the ruling coalition but is yet to back President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for a second term, said the party is suffering serious losses due to the Elections Commission's decision to dissolve the party. They include:
-
MRM is now a non-existent party; party members are signing up for other parties
-
Preparations for the presidential election have also been hampered
There is room for many to believe that the work of the EC has been influenced by politics, the MRM said, adding that the commission has failed to work in accordance with the laws, rules and regulations in managing the affairs of the parties.
"Even in important matters such as the preparation of voters lists, there are serious issues that raise questions about the ability of the EC. This party believes that the commission should work hard to regain the confidence of the people”, MRM said.
The party called on EC chairman Fuad Thaufeeg to explain to the people what problems they are facing in conducting its work fairly.
