Gasim pledges to waive off Hulhumale flat rent
The public has questioned how the loan taken to build the flats will be repaid, saying the rent cut is not reasonable or logical.
Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Gasim Ibrahim on Saturday promised to waive the rent of flats allocated to the public in Hulhumale if he comes to power.
He made the pledge while speaking at the party's 158th council meeting held on Saturday.
Gasim criticised the government's decision to give land to some people at high prices while others are given free land.
“Under my government, the rent of the flats given in Hulhumale will be waived at once,” Gasim said.
After the council meeting, Gasim's special political advisor Riyaz Rasheed also tweeted that rent would be waived off from Hiyaa flats as well as the army and police flats.
However, Gasim's promise has been criticised by many. The public has questioned how the loan taken to build the flats will be repaid, saying the rent waiver is not reasonable or logical.
"Will Gasim pay all the loans from his pocket? Don't make impossible promises. Don't try to fool the people," a member of the public said.
"This is very irresponsible. Everyone knows that this is not a promise that can be fulfilled. The loan will not be paid from Gasim's own pocket, but from public funds," another person wrote on social media.
Gasim, who is contesting the presidential election on September 9, has officially launched his campaign. After receiving the ticket, Gasim released a manifesto of his vision for the country and what he would do if he came to power.
