Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor, who has been convicted in the MMPRC corruption scandal, has been allowed to go abroad for medical treatment.

Although sentenced to 20 years in prison in connection with the MMPRC corruption scandal, Adeeb remains under house arrest as part of a plea bargain agreement with the state. While under house arrest, he was admitted to IGMH on Wednesday after his condition deteriorated.

According to relatives, Adeeb had requested Corrections to allow him to go abroad for medical treatment after he was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday.

Corrections said on Twitter that Adeeb was allowed to travel abroad to do tests that are not available in Maldives, based on its medical board. His whereabout will be monitored in coordination with the police, the authority added.

A top Corrections official told Atoll Times that Adeeb was granted 10 days to travel to Singapore. He will depart to Singapore Tuesday evening, the official added.

On Sunday, Adeeb was discharged from the hospital. However, the family told Atoll Times that even after being discharged from the hospital, his condition did not change.

Some have accused the government of trying to send Adeeb abroad before the presidential elections as part of a deal between him and the government. However, according to his family members, due to his health condition, he needs to seek treatment from abroad.

Recovering the MVR 3.2 billion lost in the MMPRC corruption scandal is an electoral pledge of this government. However, none of the funds have been recovered so far.
