MDP chairperson Fayyaz Ismail on Tuesday denied having any interest in becoming the running mate of President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih in the upcoming presidential election.

The economic minister was responding to a report published in Adhadhu newspaper on Tuesday, saying that the MDP has a list of candidates for President Solih's running mate.

"I have no interest in this," Fayyaz said on Twitter.

"This is being spread by [former MDP chairman] Moosa Manik for some reason. It's very sad."

Moosa, who was expelled from the MDP in 2014 for violating the party whip line in a crucial vote in parliament, rejoined the MDP in November. Since then, he has been supporting President Solih and is leading his campaign activities.

Moosa responded to Fayyaz saying that the party chairperson should not be "petty" on social media.

The president said on Monday that he is in discussions with individual MDP leaders to determine a running mate.

"That is one of the biggest issues in my mind right now. A decision has to be taken. I am talking to the party leaders separately. We are seeking their thoughts and opinions every day and every night," he said.

Reports say incumbent Vice President Faisal Naseem will leave Jumhoory Party (JP) and sign up to MDP to run for a second term with the president, while foreign minister Abdulla Shahid is also said to be a frontrunner.
