Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has responded to former President Mohamed Nasheed's statement that he would be transferred to house arrest within a week of PPM agreeing to work with The Democrats. Yameen said Nasheed was also involved in his "unfair treatment" by not being allowed to participate in the upcoming elections.

Speaking at a Democrats rally in GDh. Gaddhoo on Friday evening, Nasheed criticised the PPM-PNC leadership. According to him:

  • The opposition coalition leadership is not doing enough to free Yameen

  • Within a week of the PPM-PNC agreeing to work with The Democrats and sign the coalition agreement, Nasheed said he would bring President Yameen home even if he had to work for it non-stop, out on the streets of Male

The Supreme Court has ruled that Yameen has lost his chance to contest the presidential election. He has been in jail for 1,000 days to date, serving an 11-year prison sentence for money laundering and bribery convictions.

The PPM coalition held a cycle ride in Male on Saturday evening to mark the 1000th anniversary of Yameen's imprisonment. Yameen's senior lawyer and former vice president Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, who was chosen as his running mate in this election, read aloud Yameen’s reply to Nasheed's statement.

After the cycle ride, Jameel said Yameen did not get justice from the Supreme Court and lost his chance to participate in the election because Nasheed, like President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih, had a hand in the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Nasheed sits on the JSC as the speaker of the parliament.

“President Yameen believes that President Ibrahim [Mohammed Solih] was in charge of this injury to him and that President Nasheed is equally involved in this through the JSC,” Jameel said.

"And [Home Minister] Imran Abdullah is also involved”.

He said Yameen urged any PPM member not to participate in The Democrats’ ‘gags’.

Former President Nasheed has repeatedly said that the current government can only be changed if The Democrats and the PPM coalition work together. Earlier, Nasheed had invited Yameen to nominate a single candidate.
