Main opposition PPM-PNC does not want to make an agreement to give a share of the government to The Democrats, who came third in the first round of the presidential election, it is learnt.
The Democrats' interim council decided on Monday to discuss supporting the PPM-PNC in the second round of election if they agree to sign a document before Wednesday outlining their share in a PPM-PNC government and the party's policies.
However, more than one source in the PPM leadership confirmed to Atoll Times on Tuesday that the opposition does not want to enter into a coalition agreement with the Democrats.
A senior PPM-PNC source with knowledge of the discussions between the two parties, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the party’s members would not want to work with Democrats’ founder, Mohamad Nasheed, since their ideologies were so different.
"It will not be an easy decision given the sentiments of the general members. We do not think it is possible," he said.
Another senior official said the leadership's intention is not to sign any agreement with the Democrats.
Democrats’ interim chairman Hassan Latheef has also affirmed that the PPM-PNC does not want to sign an agreement.
PPM Secretary General and Campaign Spokesperson Ahmed Tholal told Atoll Times on Tuesday that the PPM-PNC leadership is discussing the motion and will announce a decision.
