According to sources, the second largest grouper was caught in 2014, and it weighed 80 kilograms.
Fishermen report that such large groupers are found near the Addu fish factory. It is believed that the big fish come to eat fish remains that are dumped into the sea near the factory. A lot of fishermen frequently go to the site to try their luck in catching such a grouper.
When the giant grouper was brought ashore, it attracted a lot of attention. Hung up from a crane, the fish stood taller than most people, and islanders took pictures with the giant fish, one after the other.
The fish has now been sold to a restaurant for MVR 2,000.
The giant grouper is one of the largest reef-dwelling fish. It may grow to more than 9.8 feet long and reach weights of over 400 kg.
