opposition PPM-PNC presidential candidate, Dr Mohamed Muizz, has said that his government will create two separate ministries for fisheries and agriculture.

Muizz made the remarks at a rally held in R. Dhuvaafaru during his current tour of the atoll, campaigning for the September 9 presidential election.

"There has been a combined ministry for fisheries and agriculture for a long time. It has to change. Fisheries is one of our most important industries. There is a separate ministry for tourism. So, a special ministry for fisheries and another for agriculture will be established," Muizz said.

At the rally, Muizz said that he would give priority to fisheries and agriculture in his government.

He said:

  • Although fisheries and agriculture fall under the same ministry, the two industries are not given enough attention

  • In particular, there are many items that Maldives can produce through the agricultural industry; but, the ministry is not paying attention to it

“If agriculture is expanded and attention is paid to it, many jobs will be created in the economy”.

Creation of two ministries for fisheries and agriculture will "end the non-doing of anything for the two industries", he said.

The result will be a further expansion of the economy with special and specific attention to tourism, fisheries and agriculture, which are the three main industries of the economy.
