Opposition PPM-PNC presidential candidate Dr Mohmmed Muizz made additional promises for tourism sector employees on Sunday, saying his government would enable all resort employees to visit their families more often and that he will change the wages of contract employees such as photographers.

Speaking at a campaign rally in L. Gan, Muizz made two main promises to the tourism sector:

  • Contract employees currently receive a fixed salary fixed salary from resorts

  • Employees have concerns about it

  • If elected in the September 9 presidential election, he will address those concerns

“It will not be a fixed amount but a percentage increase appropriate to the work done and an amount appropriate to the work done, given legal authority,” Muizz said.

Another concern expressed by resort employees is the lack of adequate leave to visit their families. Muizz promised to resolve that problem in his government. He said:

  • Employees cannot combine their off days and take a combined holiday except annual leave

  • These concerns have been discussed with industry leaders; they also agree to give more relief

"There are 8-12 off days in three months of work. That's enough time to spend with the family. So, we can accumulate the off days a couple of times a year, so that we can hopefully change the law to bring about the necessary administrative changes,” Muizz said.

"Employees will be able to visit their families more often. In addition to the four weeks in the middle of the year, they will have additional opportunities."

Muizz also reiterated some of his earlier promises to the tourism sector. These include:

  • A special housing scheme for tourism employees; in addition to the Male region, housing projects in other regions will also be allocated for the employees

  • Introduction of a retirement scheme with special additional benefits

  • Establishment of language schools in three regions of Maldives

“Therefore, the great opportunities we are proposing in the PPM-PNC manifesto for tourism has not been proposed by any other party,” Muizz said.

He said that with all those promises, he hoped it would be easy to believe that what he is saying about the employees working in the industry is the most beneficial thing for them. He assured that he would work sincerely and fulfil those promises.

“I am sure that you will accept that and move forward with us on September 9,” he said.
