President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday decided to forgive parking sticker fines that the state has not received in the past five years.
The President's Office said in a statement that the president has decided to waive the fines paid for parking stickers for the past five years after taking into consideration various reasons.
According to the statement, the reasons include:
-
There are complaints from the public that fines are increasing due to lack of adequate parking space
-
The number of fines for traffic violations is increasing year by year
“And with the major changes in the financial situation of the public due to the Covid-19 pandemic, both the president and the government recognise that such non-payment of fines is increasing,” the statement said.
Other penalties waived with a training
In addition, there are youths who are worried about not being able to pay fines for driving without a licence. The president said that a solution will be provided like the one he pledged during the 2021 local council election.
"The government has decided to waive the fines upon completion of a training programme depending on the type of fine," the statement read.
The situations are:
-
1-
Driving without license on hand when driven by licencee
-
2-
Driving while licence is lost, expired or damaged
-
3-
Driving without a driver's licence
The President's Office also said that there are certain instances where the training programme is waived based on the size of the penalty type. However, it did not say which types.
The training programme lasts between two weeks and one month.
The purpose of such a training programme, according to the President’s Office, is to reduce the number of traffic violators repeating such offences.
