Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, who has been working against MDP, although having previously served as the party’s president, has proposed that he would rejoin MDP if half of the party's national council members approve.

Nasheed made the proposal in a message to MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail on Sunday. Fayyaz sent the message to the MDP national council WhatsApp group and he confirmed to Atoll Times that it was authentic.

Fayyaz sent a message to the MDP national council WhatsApp group, which included a message sent to him by Nasheed, saying, "If there is 50% support of the MDP national council, I am ready to join the MDP”.

After sending the message, Fayyaz said, "I got the message and shared it with you”.

Nasheed was a close friend of President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih before he came to power, but the two have not spoken for a long time due to their political differences.

They held a short meeting at the President's Office on September 24. The meeting was held to discuss Nasheed's efforts to turn the country's governance system from presidential to parliamentary and the second round of the presidential election held on Saturday.

The differences between the two men escalated to the point where Nasheed resigned from the MDP and formed a new party called The Democrats. He was working politically against President Solih through the new party.

The Democrats' candidate for the presidential election, Ilyas Labeeb, received the third highest number of votes in the first round. The Democrats decided not to take sides in the second round of the election despite the MDP's efforts to win the party's support in the second round.

The second round, held on Saturday, was won by the opposition PPM-PNC candidate Dr Mohamed Muizz. Several senior members of Nasheed's party also openly supported Muizz.
