
2 envoy nominations referred to committee

Parliament on Tuesday referred to the foreign relations committee two nominations made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as Maldives' ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bangladesh.
The letters, which were sent to parliament in August and last month, were placed on the agenda in Tuesday's sitting.
The letters were read out by the Secretary General. The names were referred to the foreign relations committee for consideration, deputy speaker Eva Abdulla announced.
The names sent by the president for appointment as ambassadors are:

UAE - foreign ministry's Joint Secretary Midfa Naeem (Sent to parliament on August 27)

Bangladesh - foreign ministry's Joint Secretary Shiunin Rasheed (Sent to parliament on September 5)
Presidential spokesperson Miuvan Mohamed could not be reached for comment on the reason for sending the names for approval ahead of the presidential election in September.
With the new government now a month away from taking office, the president-elect’s office has urged not to make such changes during this period.
