Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that sea level rise is a scientific fact, and everyone should accept such facts.
In a post on 'X' on Wednesday evening, Maumoon shared satellite data showing how the sea level has changed over the past 30 years.
"Everyone should accept scientific facts. Global warming is causing sea level rise," he said in the post.
"Satellite data shows that sea levels have risen 3.4 millimeters in the past 30 years”.
When Maumoon suddenly spoke about raising sea levels, President-elect Dr Mohammed Muizzu had, in a recent interview with Qatar's Al-Jazeera, said there was no concern about Maldives’ climate change as noted by international agencies.
After watching the interview, Maumoon had praised Muizzu and wished him success in an earlier post on 'X'.
Muizzu's interview with Al-Jazeera drew criticism from some members of the public for saying he was not very concerned about climate change. Afterwards, Muizzu's spokesman Mohammed Firzul said Muizzu's concerns about climate change exists and that it would be addressed.
